January 1st, 2026 by Donald

Be clever, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
