Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
