Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
