Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
