August 28th, 2024 by Donald

Be smart, play clever, and discover how to play craps the right way!

Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
