Be cunning, play cunning, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
