Be a Master of Craps – Tricks and Plans: The History of Craps
January 26th, 2024 by Donald

Be clever, play cunning, and pickup craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
