Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
