Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
