Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Tactics: The Background of Craps
August 16th, 2023 by Donald

Be smart, play clever, and pickup craps the right way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
