Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. Many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
