Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Schemes: The Past of Craps
November 7th, 2022 by Donald

Be smart, play clever, and become versed in craps the proper way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
