Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A great many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
