Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
