Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
