Be cunning, play brilliant, and master craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for certain the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
