Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
