Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
