Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard during a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
