Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
