Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
