Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French moved down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
