Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
