Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
