Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
