Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
