Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
