Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
