Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A few think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
