Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
