Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed south and found refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
